My Blog on Watches

For those of you who know me well enough, you will know that I have an interest in watches. I am not an expert or a high end collector. Over the years however, I have bought, been given, traded or sold more than 400 watches and recently this interest was re-ignited after having to do some paid market research on prestige watches.

This coincided with me sending an email yesterday to about 10 friends on buying watches in Asia (including Australia). I based this on first hand experience which has been gained in a number of Asia Pacific countries over the last 6 – 8 years.

One of my friends, Franc, sent me an email today saying that he found this information useful and that prompted me to start this blog. I am not sure how useful the thoughts and information I want to share will be or how long I will keep this blog going but I hope you will stay tuned as I embark on this adventure!

  1. hi Ray I have a 1966 rolexsubmariner in working condition and I am going to vietnam (sigon) later in the year and thought I would have it serviced (restored) while I am there . Do you know who would do that and approx costs. Can you give me the name and address no doubt you would reccomend getting it done by a rolex trained dealer that one can trust. I thank you for your reply in advance. regards dennis

    • Dennis,

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I would not service a Rolex of that vintage anywhere in Vietnam as I think you can do it for a lot less in Singapore.

I only get lower end swiss watches like Tissot’s, Rado’s and Longines serviced in Vietnam as they mainly use ETA or Valjoux movements.

If however you really want to give it a shot, the only place I would try is Minh Quy watches on Dong Khoi Street.

      I hope this helps.

Also, would you mind telling me where you live?

      Regards / Raymon

  2. Hi Ray!

I always read your updates with enthusiasm. I see that you have been to Vietnam and I hope you had a great time there. I used to drive by motorbike from Hanoi to Sapa. It was one of the best experiences in my life. That was way back in 1998. Everything you write about, I can recall. Keep up the good work.

  3. Hi Ray

Always pleasure to read your blogs for a naive watch lover like me..I read somewhere your views that you are hesitant to pay more than 1000 for a Tag but I am really fancied by some of their chronos.. so would you stop me investing in Aquaracer? I Live in Singapore and slowly getting carried away by a good offer by Vencent watch shop here in Jurong..

looking forward to hear from you.

    • Siddharth,
      Thank you for your message.
Tag’s are not really for me BUT this is strictly a personal preference. If you like what you see and the price is right for you, please do not let me influence you otherwise.

  4. Hi Ray i am from Singapore, working as a service technician.
Would like to seek your advise on getting a watch with the budget of around S$1K
for use of work and formal wear.Which brand of watches would it be within this price range and which shops in Singapore can i find this watches? At the same time would like to check with you,i have a friend going down to United States sometime in August, would it be cheaper to purchase Swiss watches here in Singapore or in United States keeping in mind the current exchange rate.Any particular watch brands would you recommend buying in the United States which would be difficult to come by here in Singapore?

    • James,

You can try Tissot or Hamilton if you have a budget of about S$1K.

It would be cheaper to buy the watch in Singapore BUT if you do end up buying a watch in the US, there will NOT be any issues at all bringing the watch into Singapore.

  5. Hi Ray!

Thanks for your great blog. I read it all the time since the early 2009.

I want to get your advice. There is a watch called Seiko sps001j spring drive with 50% discount for around $ 4000. Is it worth buying?
Only 300 made of that model.

Appreciate a quick answer though there is only on left in the store.

    Thanks a million.

    Kind Regards Tom

  6. Hi Ray,
Stumbled upon your interesting and useful blog today. Keep up the great job!

I have a brand new unworn Rolex Submariner Oyster Perpetual Date, gold with black bezel, with box, warranty card and everything, which I wish to sell. Where can I get the best price for it?

    • Kit,

I would try Carousell if you wanted to try selling it yourself or WatchFusion at Alexandra Central.

Look for Melvin at 9843 2574.

  7. Hi Ray,

Wanted to ask, is there a difference if i buy a 2012 model of Tag when there is a newer model out there? I was looking at the Carrera 1887 2012 model but there seems to be so many other 1887 movement watches out there. But it’s really eye catching. Can you advise? Thank you!

    • Jason,

Yes there normally is some styling differences with Tag Heuer watches.

The best way to ensure you are getting the latest is to check the model numbers and compare the differences (if any).

      • Hi Ray,

Ty for your reply. So its not like im getting conned for buying an old model or anything right? Hehe. Sorry for asking. Im just getting into watches and really need some guidance.

        • Jason,

Check the prices of the model you are after – and of course if the item is BNIB or used, if the price is something you are comfortable with, go for it.
