I was in Malacca over the weekend for the celebrations of the 500th Anniversary of the Portuguese landing in Malaysia. As many of you would know, Malacca is ‘home’ to the Portuguese Eurasian community and so we had about 1500 hundred Eurasians, their friends and family congregating on this usually quite run down and “uneventful” locale in Malacca.
Whilst walking around Basement 1 in the Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall we came across this shop that was reasonably well appointed selling what appeared to be branded watches.
Needless to say we went in to take a closer look.
EVERY WATCH IN THE SHOP WAS A FAKE!
They had brands like Tag Heuer, Hublot, Vacheron Constantin, Rolex (of course), Omega and Panerai. Some of them were bad fakes but some were quite good and looked quite close to the real thing. Prices ranged from between $40 – $300. The “higher end” watches came with boxes and certificates as well but the low ends ones like the Rolex 6694’s looked terrible.
What I found amazing was that the shop was so blatantly obvious and when I aksed the shopkeeper if he was concerned about being raided by the Police or by the original watch brands he said that this was Malaysia so it was not an issue.
