Going extinct

It’s been a busy week. Purchases this week include

  • Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch
  • Rolex Submariner – Green with Ceramic Dial
  • Rolex Explorer 1 – 39mm

Have also sold a couple of watches and parts to clear up “inventory”.

Because of all this, I have had to get some work done before selling a watch or making some slight modifications to suit my personal style and as usual, I headed down to Choy Hing at Bras Basah Complex for work I needed done in the straps / bracelet department.

Looking at Lim and his ageing father at work, I was reminded just how rare shops like Choy Hing are becoming. When Lim Sr. was younger, he repaired all kinds of watches including premium brands like Rolex. Choy Hing now specialises in basic repairs and have a good assortment of watch bracelets and straps at very reasonable prices.

The shop looks like it is stuck in the 70’s and looking around today, you can see thousands and thousands of dollars of obsolete inventory and spares that simply needs to be thrown away. Lim Jr. says they are looking at ‘closing shop’ as business is not as good as it used to be.

I hope they do not do so in a hurry. Businesses like Choy Hing are just the sort of businesses that help keep the trade alive and is a valuable resource for novices such as your truly. Support them if you can!
