Shop Around and Get the Best Price

August 20, 2011 Ray 1

My son Joshua and I were out getting a new strap for his F1 Tag Heuer and while waiting to get the new strap fitted we chanced upon a shop in Bras Basah Complex (in Singapore) that sold Luminox watches. After trying on a few models we settled on the 7051 as he liked the look and fit. It had a recommended retail price of $490.00 and after some tough bargaining managed to knock it down to $325.00 I asked the shopkeeper if he would accept $260.00 for the watch as I thought I remembered seeing it for sale at that Read More

Unusual “Replica” Watches

August 16, 2011 Ray 0

I just came across this very unusual website – http://www.mkiiwatches.com Mk II apparently started as a business selling watch parts about a decade ago but has now grown to become a watch company specializing in Swiss and Custom Made watches. They say they produce 1000 pieces a year and use mainly ETA movements with customised rotors. They are now taking orders for a limited edition of 300 pieces paying homage to the “Omega Seamaster 300″. I think the watches are overpriced for what they are but it is an interesting business concept that seems to be paying dividends. They also have Read More

BNIB – Brand New In Box

July 29, 2011 Ray 0

We sometimes see on ebay or hear about BNIB watches for sale. Some of us might be concerned that there might be something mechanically wrong with these watches or worse that they could be stolen. Whether you are buying a new, used or BNIB watch, the same common rules would apply. It it is off ebay, I would look at the reputation of the seller. A high transaction seller with very high or 100% satisfaction ratings would be a safe bet. A watch reseller who has been around for years and whom you have dealt with previously of who has a good reputation Read More

Watch Repair & Service

July 27, 2011 Ray 1

I am doing some ‘spring’ cleaning. I have been going through the inventory of watches I have built up over the years and I am separating them into 3 categories. The first category are the watches that I wear about once a month. The second, are those from my personal collection that I am keeping for… The last category are a bunch of watches that are either for repair and / or sale. Some of these 20 or so watches are pictured above. Obviously before putting them up for sale, I will get them either serviced or given the thumbs Read More

Omega Serial Numbers

July 24, 2011 Ray 2

I sometimes buy an old watch and am not sure exactly how old it is. For most brands, the information is not so easy to find but for some brands like Omega and Rolex, the Calibre, Case and / or movement number will give you a pretty accurate indication. For example my friend Andrew has this nice looking, Automatic, Omega Seamaster. He was wondering aloud the other day how old it was. This of course made me want to find out! Based on the Calibre No – 1010 and the Serial No – 412XXXXX, you can tell the watch was Read More

UK Made Watch

July 24, 2011 Ray 3

Ivy asked me this question recently – Could you please recommend some watches from UK, with good reputation and quality and reasonable price? This is something that I have never looked at before and after surfing the web for a few minutes I came across a few names. They all seem to be small companies like H. Pinchbeck and Robert Loomes with a couple making some unique looking timepieces. If I were buying a watch strictly because I liked the look, one brand that caught my attention was IWI Watches, named after its founder Ian Walsh. Each watch is made by hand and Read More

Green Rolex Submariner

July 24, 2011 Ray 0

My friend Martin, is interested in getting a ‘green’ Rolex Submariner and I have been looking at what is available on the market. The green submariners were introduced in 2003 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Submariner. Production ended in 2010. If you get a 2003 manufactured watch or 2010 watch, they are slightly higher in price than anything manufactured between 2004 – 2009. Aside from the serial number, you can tell a 2003 model by the “4” on the number “40” on the bezel. This is squarish in shape compared to the later models which look like the Read More

Good Watches for $500

July 18, 2011 Ray 0

Whilst I prefer I prefer automatic or manual wind watches, I am not against having a Quartz watch for rough or casual wear. One brand I am particularly fond off is Luminox. The Navy SEAL Colormark watch pictured here is the timepiece that put Luminox on the map. A watch specifically designed for use under the most demanding conditions imaginable. This Search and Rescue (SAR) Watch from Luminox glows 100 times brighter than other luminous watches, which allows for easier visibility and sells for about $220.00. A good price for a fashionable, 44 mm Swiss Watch that looks unique and Read More

Good Watches for $500

July 18, 2011 Ray 0

Here’s another watch I would consider if I were looking for a decent watch for under $500. As most watch aficionados will agree, a classic watch should have an automatic or manual wind movement and this Hamilton is powered by an ever reliable ETA 2824 Swiss automatic movement. They come in a good sized, 42 mm stainless steel case, sapphire crystal, black luminous dial and genuine leather strap. At a retail price of $360.00, these watches tick all the right boxes for me. If we want something that looks a little sportier, the Hamilton Khaki Scuba is something I would Read More
